When therapy doesn't help

There can be many reasons that vitamin and mineral therapies do not help. The most common is that the guidelines of the therapy are not observed. The following is a summary of the most common hindrances.

Forgetfulness
Some people are not very good at observing guidelines. They forget to take their preparations, especially if they are busy at work. It can be overwhelming to take preparations morning, midday, and evening if there are a lot of other things to keep in control. That some preparations must be taken with food while others work best when taken between meals does not make the situation easier.

If it is unavoidable, then divide the day’s preparations into two rations instead of there so that despite everything you get the dosage that the therapy warrants. Under any circumstance you must discipline yourself or get others to hold you in check. Write the preparations and their dosages down and place this summary with the preparations to make it easier to remember to take the pills. Divide the daily dose up so that the preparations which should be taken together (morning, midday, or evening) are put together in small bags, boxes, or glasses so that they are easy to take. Hang a reminder on the refrigerator or another place where you cannot avoid being reminded by it every day.

Mono-therapy
We are not what we eat but what we are able to absorb, and we first benefit from nutrients when they have entered the right place in the body. It is for example not a good idea to take a calcium supplement alone against osteoarthritis. By doing this you risk that the calcium does not enter the bones, but instead accumulates in, for example, the kidneys and heart where it be damaging. This is avoided by taking a balanced supplement.

Do not take vitamins and minerals alone. Instead make sure to get a broad basis supplement of all vitamins and minerals and supplement afterwards with vitamins and minerals you need in higher therapeutic doses. Try to use preparations which have been made easily absorbable. Ask professionals if in doubt. Do not take high therapeutic doses at the start of therapy, but slowly increase the dosage over a period of time. Even thought the body does not absorb everything, it will absorb the nutrients necessary to improve absorption in the future. Low amounts of stomach acid, lactic acid bacteria in the intestines, and digestive enzymes are three of the most important factors in lowered nutrient uptake.

Mistaken diagnosis
If you suffer from something other than your diagnosis and are therefore not treated with the optimal reparations, your symptoms will not be reduced. This problem is well known in both conventional and alternative medicine.

Do not avoid going to the doctor, especially if you are unsure about what is wrong with you. If you do not feel that you have been helped, look for a second opinion somewhere else. Nobody knows everything. If you take medicine, especially if you have taken it over a long period, be aware that your medicine use may need to be reassessed. Ask you doctor if some of your medicine can be reduced or eliminated.

Medicine and loss of nutrients
Illness increases the body’s need for vitamins and minerals. This is also true of many kinds of medicine. For example, we know that herbal medicine made from St John's wort can reduce the effectiveness of some forms of prescribed medicine, but the opposite is also true. If you take conventional medicine it can reduce the effectiveness of biologic treatment. The following are some examples of nutrient loss due to the use of prescribed medicines:

  • If you take antacids you loose calcium, phosphorus, and folic acid.
  • Antibiotic treatment both destroys the natural intestinal flora and leads to losses of vitamins B and K.
  • Cholesterol reducing medicine reduces the body’s content of coenzyme Q10.
  • If you use laxatives, you loose fat soluble vitamins, beta carotene, calcium, and phosphorus.
  • With birth control use, you loose vitamins B and C, magnesium, selenium, and zinc.
  • Some diuretics increase the loss of potassium, calcium, sodium, magnesium, B1, B6, and zinc.

Disease and lifestyle
If your illness is due to your lifestyle and has therefore developed over many years, it can take many years to become healthy again. It requires that you change you health detrimental habits. It must be considered that vitamins, minerals, dietary supplements, and natural medicine do not work as fast as a course of antibiotics. Give these things time to work and remember that you can almost always do more to aid the body’s regeneration process. You can, for example, eat healthier, drink more water, get more exercise, avoid all stimulants (candy, coffee, deserts, tobacco, and alcohol) and go to bed earlier.

Find out if the dosages of the preparations that you already take is enough, should be increased, or should be supplemented with other preparations. Detoxification can be increased by used a sauna, going to zone therapy or acupuncture, or by taking herbs or other preparations which increase the liver’s and kidneys’ detoxification ability.

The importance of intestinal function
When the intestines are unhealthy neither is the individual, and a stressed intestine will always, to some extent, lessen other health related progress. Therefore any healing process should give high priority to proper function of the digestive system and ensure that there is no constipation. This can in some cases require detox in the form of an enema or an herbal cure, where the intestines are cleared of inflammation and stuck faecal matter. The intestinal walls can also be more permeable, or leaky, than normal, so that fragments of waste that should remain in the intestines cross over into the blood and stress the immune system. This is also a reason that intestinal therapy can ease chronic skin problems and hypersensitivity symptoms.

Amalgam fillings
In some cases of so called resistance to therapy things first start to get better after a visit to the dentist and the removal of amalgam fillings or the treatment of gum disease. This indicates a direct link between the teeth and the body’s organs.

Chiropracty
In other cases one or more chiropractic treatments can push a course or treatment which has stopped working forward.

Psyche and disease
Supplements of vitamins and minerals are the answer to everything when it comes to the treatment of disease, even though they are among the most important factors. The psyche should also be appreciated as a factor in disease. Especially with severe disease, the will to get better is very important. Pent up emotional trauma and stress is believed to be the provoking and maintaining factor for many diseases.

Psychological help, group therapy, visualisation, meditation, yoga, classical homeopathy, and exercise, are examples of useful tools which have helped many people.

There is nonetheless no doubt that the best way to achieve good psychic well being is though correct nutrition.
