Pain, in general

Pain is a warning signal from the body, that something is wrong. Therefore it is important to try to find the cause instead of just taking painkillers.

Pancreatitis

Painful disease characterized by nausea, vomiting, and light fever. Can be caused by stone formation in the biliary passages and digestive enzymes being arrested in the pancreas and attacking pancreatic tissue.

Parasite infection

Microscopical animals e.g. worms, amoebas, and mites can find their way into the intestines, bloodstream, liver, or central nervous system and breed there. Parasites are involved in a number of serious diseases, e.g. malaria and sleeping sickness.

Paratyphoid fever

Parkinson's disease

Chronic degenerative brain disease with reduced production of the neurotransmitter dopamine. Symptoms are tremor (continuing shaking movement of the hands, head, and jaw), rigidity, slow movements, and progressive mental retardation.

Periodontal disease

Inflammation of the gums; spreading downwards, attacking the supportive tissue of the teeth. The first stage is called gingivitis. Caused by a bacterial infection or other conditions. Symptoms: Sore and swollen gums that bleed when touched.

Peyronie's disease

Thickening and contraction of the connective tissue of the penis causing the penis to bend when erect. Having an erection can be painful. The cause is unknown. The condition may be transitory or permanent and can be relieved by surgery.

PKU - Phenylketonuria

A rare hereditary condition in which the amino acid phenylalanine is not properly metabolized; the resulting build-up of toxins can cause severe mental retardation. It is caused by a lack of the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase.

PMS - Pre-menstrual syndrome

The pre-menstrual syndrome - also known as PMS - is the designation of the physical symptoms and emotional fluctuations that many women are troubled by 7 - 14 days before their menstruation.

Pneumonia

Bacterial-, viral-, or mycoplasmic infection. The pathological picture depends on the etiology of the infection. The symptoms are shivers, high fever, coughing, expectoration, and sometimes chest pains. Most common in immuno-suppressed individuals.

Poisonous animals

Infection, pain, and injury as a result of bites, stings, and touch of poisonous animals like ants, fish, lizards, scorpions, sea urchins, snakes, spiders, starfish, and stinging jellyfish.

Preeclampsia

Complication of diverse seriousness towards the end of pregnancy. The symptoms are high blood pressure, protein secretion in the urine, and accumulation of liquid in various tissues. Caused by inflammation of the kidneys.

Pregnancy, problems of

Besides bringing happiness, pregnancy can result in small or larger physical problems, such as anaemia, nausea, stretch marks, back pain, indigestion, hair loss, haemorrhoids, loosening of the pelvis, urological problems, oedemas, etc.

Prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancer forms for men above 50 years of age. In many cases, the cancer grows so slowly that the patient dies from other causes before the fatal stages of the disease, but there is no reason to take any chances.

Prostate gland problems

Prostatitis

Inflammation of the prostate gland. Swelling and pain of the prostate, most often caused by a bacterial infection. Frequent urination, sometimes discharge from the urethra, muddy urine, and fever are some of the symptoms.

Psoriasis

Hereditary skin disease with characteristic dry, reddish, well-demarcated discolourations with light scales in small or larger areas. The rash is most pronounced on the elbows and knees and in the scalp.
