Arthritis and rheumatic diseases in general

Arthritis/rheumatic diseases are generic terms for a group of diseases of the joints, connective tissues, muscles, and tendons. The most common are mentioned here. Also see "Rheumatoid arthritis", "Gout", and "Osteoarthritis".

  • Gout

Generic term for diseases with increased concentrations of uric acid in the body, re-occurring attacks of joint inflammation caused by crystallization of the synovial fluid, accumulation of uric acid in the joint cavities (tophi), and kidney problems.

  • Osteoarthritis / Arthrosis

An advancing degenerative suffering in the weight-bearing joints. It is primarily the cartilage that is being worn down. A genetic predisposition and wrongly - and too little - use of the joints also play a role in the progression of osteoarthritis.

  • Rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, autoimmune disease which attacks the body's synovial membranes and joints but also other parts of the body. The disease can cease but often leaves behind side effects such as chronic handicaps.
