African Prune - Pygeum africanum

Also called Prunus africana. The bark of this African tree contains phytosterols and is used in the treatment of prostate hyperplasia, inflammation of the prostate, and male infertility caused by decreased prostate secretion.

Pygeum has a beneficial effect in combination with the herb Saw Palmetto, Serenoa repens.

Dosage
Pygeum can be taken as a dried root: 2 - 4 g. a day.
In the form of capsules: 100 - 200 mg. a day.
As an extract: 2 - 4 ml. a day (1:1)

The dosage should be dispersed throughout the day. To be taken for several months.

Side effects
There are normally no side effects connected with taking Pygeum. In rare cases nausea and mild symptoms from the gastro-intestinal tract may be experienced.

Please note
Because of its increasing popularity, there have been reports that the tree is threathened with extinction in Africa.
