Nerves
In India, where Bacopa (Brahmi) is a traditional medicinal plant, the plant is primarily used against problems in the nervous system and mental function. It is believed to repair damaged nerve cells and increase synapse activity causing an increase in memory and mental capacity. It also has a cramp reducing effect. Bacopa is also used against nervous disorders of the type commonly called “bad nerves.
Digestion
In other parts of the world it is used against other symptoms including constipation, gas, ulcers, and other digestive problems. It is also used against infection with filarial parasites.
Sexual organs
In China Bacopa is used against impotence, premature ejaculation, and sterility.
Allergy
Bacopa is used for asthma and bronchitis and against skin problems such as eczema and psoriasis.
Other
The liquid pressed from the plant is used in some places as massage oil against arthritis pain.
Ingredients
The useful part of the plant is the part which grows above ground. Bacopa contains various active ingredients in the category of steroid-saponins, including so called bacosides and bitter matter. Some preparations are standardized to a set amount of bacosides.
Side effects
Bacopa has now knows toxic effects and is without side effects when taken alone.
Interactions
Bacopa can increase the effects of calcium blockers and medicine used to combat thyroid deficiency. Bacopa can also inhibit the effect of liver detoxifying enzymes and can therefore enhance the effects of medicine and other herbs.
Dosage
Dried drug: 1-2 g, 3 times daily.
Extract (1:2): 5-12 ml daily.
Standardised extract (20% bacoside A+B): 200-400 mg daily.
Additive effect
Bacopa can be combined with the following herbs for increase effect: Schisandra chinensis, Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus), Panax ginseng, and Ginkgo biloba.
