Barberry- Berberis vulgaris (and aquifolium)

Also known as barberry and oregon-gape. Used against gallbladder problems, arthritis, eczema, and other skin disorders. Is blood cleansing, mildly laxative, digestive strengthening, calming, and bacteria inhibiting.

The bark of the stems and roots are primarily used. On some cases the berries can be used as well. Barberry contains many effective alkaloids, including berberin, which is also found in goldenrod, berbamin and oxyancanthine.

Barberry stimulates the production of bile and is effective against gallstones and other gallbladder problems. It strengthens the liver and the intestinal mucosa. It has a contractive effect, which counteracts diarrhoea. It is effective against some digestive tract infections, including amoeba dysentery. The plant is traditionally used against stomach ulcers and works to reduce fever. It is useful against sinus and middle ear infections as well as disorders associated with increased mucous production. The extract of barberry root has been shown to reduce blood pressure in animals and could have this effect in people. An extract can also be used externally against cuts, psoriasis and other skin disorders.
