Contains bitter substances (e.g. Cnicin) that induces the secretion in the stomach and stimulates the function of the gall. In small doses, this substance is beneficial to digestive disturbances and constipation.
Used for its blood purifying effect. Also used for strengthening the cardiac function and to relieve pneumonia.
Stimulates the production of milk in breast-feeding women.
Is said to have a beneficial effect against AIDS.
