Very few people suffer from boron deficiency. However, elderly people may benefit from 2-3 mg. a day, because they often have difficulty in absorbing calcium. People with joint problems as well as people with reduced mental alertness may also benefit from a boron supplement.
The American Department of Agriculture made a survey which showed that if women who suffered from osteoporosis took 3 mgs of boron a day, they decreased their loss of bone tissue by 40 % in as little as 8 days.
Apples are a good source of boron. It can generally be found in greens, fruits, nuts, and grains. Red wine and grape peels also contain a fair amount of boron.
Dosage and safety
There is no official recommended daily intake of boron. Health officials from many countries have discussed where the upper safe limit for intake of this mineral should be set. There are many proposals, which range from 6 – 20 mg daily for adults.
