Only the species Coleus forskohlii contains forskolin, which can assist in reducing high blood pressure, increasing release of hormones from the thyroid gland, increasing secretion of digestional enzymes, relaxing the smooth muscle, and reducing eye pressure.
The plant has a laxative and carminative effect, and is used for stomach pain and bloatedness.
Used for sclerosis and bad blood flow in the coronary artery, and to strenghten the heart function. Has a general blood vessel dilating effect; also in the brain.
Good for asthma, bronchitis and other chronic respiratory diseases, since forskolin inhibits contraction of the bronchi. Induces regeneration of damaged nerves, and has a possible antidepressive effect.
Coleus counteracts indigestion caused by low gastric acid production and pancreatic enzymes. It has a digestive effect.
Coleus is used both in- and externally for the treatment of psoriasis.
Inhibits blood clotting.
Fluid extract (1:1) can be used to increase the metabolism.
Used externally for the treatment of glaucoma. You should consult an experienced therapist with vast experience in external herbal treatment of the eyes.
It is also used with other medicinal plants, e.g. hawthorn and common hawthorn in the treatment of high blood pressure.
Dosage
Extract: (1:1): 6 - 12 ml. daily
Dried herb: 2 - 4 g. thrice daily
Forskolin: 10 mg. 2 - 3 times daily
Side Effects and Interactions
Coleus is not poisenous, but it may enhance the effect of other herbs and medicines. Coleus should not be used together with medicine against hyper tension or blood-thinning medicines. Coleus should not be used by pregnant or nursing women.
