Damiana contains substances that have an effect similar to the male sex hormone, testosterone. Therefore, the plant is used as an aphrodisiac (love potion). Can also be used for premature ejaculation and impotence in men. However, it has a fortifying effect on the sexual organs of both sexes.
Has a strengthening and stimulating effect on the central nervous system, and can be used for mild depressions or nervous break-downs. Can be used in case of anxiety or depression.
Used for constipation, infections in the urinary tract, and for menstrual problems (tension, painful or delayed menstruation).
Has anti-septic, diuretic and mildly laxative effects.

When used internally, it affects the absorption of iron. Large doses may have a laxative effect.
