The mildly laxative, diuretic and sudorific effects of elder are used in the treatment of rheumatic diseases, where it increases the discharge of waste products.

Elder has always been a part of folk medicine for e.g. the flu and colds.

Extract made from elderberries and flowers is the best cure against influenza virus. Research performed in Israel has shown that elderberry extract (Sambucol R) can have a preventive effect on the flu and shorten the course of the disease. There is a substance in elderberries that makes it impossible for the influenza virus to penetrate the cell walls.

Elderberries
The berries contain a large amount of flavonoids, vitamin A and C. It can be used as a refreshing tonic that promotes the resistance and the health. Can be used for viral and bacterial infections. In case of the flu, it can shorten the course of the disease and relieve the symptoms.

Elder leaves
The tea has a diuretic effect and can be used in case of diabetes.

Elder flowers
An elder extract has a relaxing effect, stimulates the secretion of sweat, contracts the mucous membranes in nose and throat, and can therefore relieve colds, hay fever and catarrh.
Used for allergies, candidiasis, chronic catarrh and ear infections.
As a decoction: 1 cup 3 times a day, e.g. in case of a cold.
As an extract: 2-3 cups a day a few moths before and during the hay fever season.
As a tincture: 1 teaspoonful with water, 3-4 times a day in case of hay fever.
As a cream: For dry and chapped skin.

Decoction of bark
Has a light laxative and diuretic effect. Please note: A bark decoction should not be taken in too large doses! Should only be used under the supervision of a skilled herbal specialist.

Precautions
You should never use herbal medicine if you suspect that you have symptoms that should be clarified by a doctor. If you do not feel any improvement within a month - contact a phytotherapist or a biopath.

Side effects
None, if the recommended dosage is followed.

Dosage
3 ml. or a spoonful a day. Take it with some water. The herbs are strong - if you like, you can rinse with a tasty beverage.

Dwarf elder is called Sambucus ebulus in Latin.

Further fortification
