The interest in grapefruit seed extract (GSE) against pathogenic microorganisms is attributable to the German doctor Dr. Harich (1919 - 1996) who emigrated to the USA.
GSE has shown to be effective against certain staphylococci, streptococci, coli-, salmonella-, and legionella bacteria. It is also effective against a number of fungi, including candida, and quite a few vira.
No resistance development has been observed when using GSE.
Grapefruit seed extract can be found in both fluid and powdered form.
Gargle
In case of throat infection, you can gargle your throat in water with GSE added to it. The dosage is 3 drops in a small glass of water (150 ml.).
Warnings and notes
Do not take grapefruit seed extract if you are hypersensitive to citrus fruits and do not use it in your eyes. Start with a low dose and slowly step it up.
Internal use of GSE
Because of the well-founded suspicion that some GSE products might contain carcinogenic extraction products and preservatives, we do not recommend internal use of GSE at present. Furthermore, it is also said that a large part of the inhibitory effect of GSE on microorganisms is supposed to be caused by these additives. GSE preparations that are completely free from additives would then require a dosage 5 times higher in order to achieve the same effect.
