Gurmar - Gymnema sylvestre

Tropical creeper growing in Southern India and parts of Africa. Gurmar can lower the blood sugar and has been used against diabetes for thousands of years. Furthermore, it is used against arthritis and digestive problems, including constipation.

The leaves from the Gurmar plant contains a number of active substances, e.g. saponins and various related glycosides which are believed to be responsible for the many abilities of the plant. As an example, you can reduce the ability of your taste buds to register the sweet taste for several hours after having chewed some Gurmar leaves. The ability to taste bitter things is also reduced.

As a remedy for diets, 6 drops of (1:2-) Gurmar extract dripped onto the tongue ½ hour before a meal is said to be able to reduce the appetite. In the countries where Gurmar is a traditional part of folk medicine, it is also used against arthritis and podagra. Taking Gurmar also has a diuretic effect.

Most thoroughly examined, however, is the ability of Gurmar to lower the blood sugar. Gurmar enhances the effect of insulin in the body. This will result in an increased transformation of glucose into glycogen (stored sugar), but it does not seem to lower the blood sugar in healthy individuals.

In studies, Gurmar has been able to be of benefit to both type 1 and type 2 diabetics. Persons who are dependent on insulin can reduce their need for insulin by using Gurmar preparations. Sustained use (over a period of ½ - 2 years) can reduce the fasting blood sugar level and the amount of lipids in the blood. Active substances in Gurmar to some degree seem to be able to repair damaged beta cells which are the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. However, Gurmar is no valid replacement for insulin and the best results are achieved if the beta cells have not completely degenerated.
