Epidemium grows wild in China, Asia and Europe.
There is an anecdote related to Horny Goat Weed. According to this the herbs ability to strengthen the sexual capacity was discovered by a goatherd who noticed a strong increase in sexuell activity of the goats who had eaten it.
The leaves have testosterone-like effects in the body and is said to be able to increase the production of sperm and the sensitivity of the nerves. Animals which eat Epidemium have increased levels of several hormones, including dopamine. It is also a traditional remedy against kidney- and liver problems and rheumatic problems - especially in the back and knees. Its strength is measured by the content of the glycoside icarrin, which increases the blood content of nitric oxide (NO2) affecting the sexuelle function in both sexes. Furthermore, the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is inhibited whereby the amount of acetylcholine is increased.
Dosage proposal as a single remedy: 1 - 1.5 g. twice a day between meals. As with other aphrodisiacal herbs, the full effect of Epimedium is first achieved after 3-5 days of use. It should not be used by women who are pregnant or nursing. Possible overdose symptoms are arrhythmia of the heart and sleeplessness.
Dosage suggestions
- Introduction Phase: As with other aphrodisiac herbs the full effect of Epidemium is achieved only after 3-5 days of use. Take 1 to 1.5 g twice daily delayed for meals.
- One hour before "physical activity" is 2 g.
Do not take more than 2 to 3 grams daily. Less if the product is an extract.
Should not be used by children, pregnant and nursing women.
Side effects
Possible overdose symptoms are heart rhythm disorders and insomnia.
