Liquorice root is an adaptogen which means that it has a general fortifying effect by promoting the effects of the adrenal glands. Therefore, liquorice is good for stress and illnesses that are caused by stressful situations, as well as physical and mental conditions. It works generally to reduce inflammation and it has a soothing effect on the mucous membranes so it is also beneficial to the respiratory passages, the stomach and the intestinal system. Also good for gastritis, stomach ulcers and wounds on the mucous membranes
It has an antispastic effect on the respiratory passages in case of irritable coughing. Used in the treatment of asthma, bronchitis, and gastritis. It is a good supplement to other herbs in case of rheumatism, liver diseases (hepatitis) and autoimmune diseases. Has some antibacterial and antiviral effect.
Can be used for infections, including ulcer causing bacteria, and can reduce the effect of allergic reactions.
Has a purifying effect on the intestines. Promotes the production of adrenalin and lessens muscular cramps. Dissolves mucus in the lungs and the bronchial tubes. Has an oestrogen-hormone effect which means that voice changes may occur after long-term use. Also stimulates the production of interferon.
In the National Hospital of Denmark, a number of clinical tests have been performed with liquorice root and these tests have proved that the herb has a powerful effect on the immune response as it stimulates some of the signal hormones (interferon).
Precautions
You should never use herbal medicine if you suspect that you have symptoms that should be clarified by a doctor - e.g. hypertension - see side effects!
If you do not experience any improvement within a month - contact a phytotherapists or a naturopath.
Contraindications
Should not be used during pregnancy, or in case of hypertension or kidney diseases.
Side effects
Liquorice can elevate the blood pressure. This is due to its content of glycyrrhizic acid and its metabolite glycyrrhetinic acid which inhibits the breakdown of the hormone cortisol.
If you tend to suffer from hypertension; contact a trained therapist.
Dosage
- 1:1 extract: 3 ml., or a babyspoonful a day. Take it with some water. Extracts are strong - rinse with your favourite beverage.
- Dried root: 1 – 4 g 3 x daily before meals, in a basic or neutral solution.
Further fortification
Depends on the reasons for the problems:
In case of tiredness, stress or to strengthen the mental area: Russian root (Eleutherococcus senticosus), Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) and Blue skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora).
In case of gastrointestinal problems: Cassia, Mexican yams (Discorea villosa), and yellow dock (Rumex crispus)
In case of chronic problems where you have been taking predisolone or hydrocortisone for a long period of time, liquiorice root may be a good supplement to make the adrenal glands work well again. However, it is rarely enough to take liquorice root! Contact a naturopath or a phytotherapist so that you can get an individual programme that specifically fits your symptoms.
Deglycerrhizinated liquorice (DGL)
Here glycyrrhizic acid and glycyrrhetinic acid have been removed from the liquorice extract. These are the responsible chemicals for liquorice’s effects of causing potassium deficiency, fluid retention, and high blood pressure. DGL maintains liquorice’s curative qualities. Take it a half hour before a meal.
