Lithium (Li)

Mineral which has been used as an antidepressant for many years. Has also been used to prevent winter associated depression.

Lithium is believed to promote the activity of acetylcholine in the central nervous system by inhibiting choline transport across the blood-brain barrier. Lithium supplement block hormone release from the thyroid gland to the blood and can therefore be used to combat hyperthyroidism.
Deficiency symptoms
Lithium deficiency can affect the body’s sodium – potassium balance and can cause mood swings and manic – depressive symptoms.
Lithium for herpes outbreaks
Herpes outbreaks can be helped by lithium salves applied directly to the affect area or by submersion in water containing an 8 % solution of lithium salts (lithium succinate or lithium carbonate). Zinc salve can be used concurrently. Lithium inhibits the multiplication of the DNA – based herpes virus without harming normal cells.
Symptoms of over dosage
Symptoms of over dosage include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, shaking, muscle weakness, thirst, increased urination frequency, lowered thyroid function, kidney disorders, and cardiovascular disorders.
Heparin can combat symptoms of over dosages. See a physician for guidance and care. One tablespoon rapeseed oil coupled with 400 i.e. vitamin E daily can be used to prevent possible side effects.
Interactions
If used together with:

  • Arthritis medications containing NSAIDs it increases the risk of toxicity
  • SSRI class antidepressants it increases the risk of uneasiness, confusion, sleep disorders, and fever
  • Diuretics and ACE inhibitors (heart medicine) it increases the risk of dehydration.

Natural lithium sources
Tobacco, sugarcane, seaweed, and rosemary. Some areas have high levels of lithium in the groundwater.
