Nettle - Urtica dioica

The leaves and roots are used as a diuretic and lightly stimulating medicine for the circulatory system. It is blood purifying. Used for general debilitation, anaemia and rheumatism, prostate hypertrophy, allergies, and eczema.

Keywords
Diuretic, lactatic, glactagogue, blood purifying, lightly nourishing and stimulating for the circulatory system, since nettle contains some silicon salts and other minerals. For this reason, it is used for general fatigue and anaemia.

Effective against rheumatism due to its mildly purging and diuretic effect via the kidneys. Increases the secretion of uric acid and other acids and is used for treating uric arthritis and skin diseases like eczema and pimples.

The root - not the leaves - is particularly important in the treatment of an enlarged prostate.

It is also effective against asthma and other allergies, as nettle reduces allergic symptoms. It also strenghens the mucous membranes of the lungs.

Nettle is good for the intestinal function and is effective against urinary diseases, haemorrhoids, diarrhoea and intestinal worms.

Good for women with a low level of oestrogen.

Good for men, since it enhances sexual functions. Also good for testicle atrophy.

Precautions
Never use herbal medicine, if you are in doubt whether your symptoms should be clarified by a doctor. If considerable improvement is not achieved within one month you should contact a phytotherapist or naturopath.

Contraindications
Must not be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Must not be used in patients with impaired renal function.

Side effects
Allergic reactions may occur.

Dosage
Leaves:
Dried herb: 9 - 18 g. a day.
1:2-extract: 2 - 6 ml. a day. To be taken with a little water.
Root:
1:2-extract: 4 - 8 ml. a day. To be taken with a little water.
Extracts are strong - you may want to rinse with a tasty drink.

Further fortification
Against generel fatigue, you can supplement with a combined vitamin- and mineral supplement.

Against arthritis where a thorough cleansing is required, use Milk thistle (Silybum marianum), Artichoke (Cynara scolymus), and Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis).
Against rheumatic pain you can supplement with extracts of celery seeds (Apium graveolens), Devil's claw (Harpagophytum procumbens), and lignum vitae (Guaiacum officinalis).
Against prostate problems, you can supplement with saw palmetto (Serenoa repens).
