These substances are composed by fatty acids and various vitamin-like substances. They are part of the body's cell membranes and, therefore, they are vital to our health.
Phosphatidyl choline
Phosphatidyl choline composes the most important part of the body’s cell membranes. Phosphatidyl choline makes the body’s cholesterol more dissolvable and therefore less likely to cause arteriosclerosis. It also reduces the platelet’s tendency to stick together. It can be made by the body's own enzyme system from lecithin that we get from the food. The resulting amounts are very small, however, so pure, concentrated phosphatidyl choline is recommended for therepeutic dosage. Consumption of phosphatidyl choline is not a source of choline. Lecithin typically contains 10 - 20% of phosphatidyl choline.
Phosphatidylserine
It partakes in maintaining the brain's production of signalling substances. It is also present in the brain's carbohydrate metabolism, it is necessary for maintaining the sodium-potassium balance, and it helps regulate the production of stress hormones.
Phosphatidylserine is used in the treatment of a failing memory, concentration difficulties, and generally in the treatment of reduced mental capacity. Can be given as a supplement when preparing for exams.
Phosphatidylserine is normally absorbed quickly from the intestine and easily passes through the blood-brain barrier.
Therapeutic dosage:
100 - 300 mg. daily.
There are no reports of side effects from the intake of phosphatidylserine.
