Pomegranate - Punica granatum

A seed rich fruit from the Middle East which is an old medicine used against intestinal worms, diarrhoea, and flatulence. Recent research indicates that the fruit and bark is active against heart and circulatory disorders and certain forms of cancer.

Pomegranates contain a number of strong antioxidants, for example punicalagin A and B, as well as alkaloids, tannins and terpenoids. Some pomegranate products are standardised in relation to punicalagin content or to the active ingredient, ellagic acid.

Both the fruit (pulp, peel, and seeds) as well as the bark are used.

Worms
Tapeworms use suction to attach themselves to the wall of the intestines, but the alkaloids from pomegranates cause them to let go. If one takes a laxative immediately afterwards it is possible to get rid of the tapeworm.

Disorders of the Circulatory System
Ongoing research suggests that a dose of pomegranate is effective against damage caused by free radicals, also called oxidative stress, and, with heart disease, the beginning stages of vascular disease (arteriosclerosis) and high blood pressure.

Erectile dysfunction
It is unknown which substance is responsible for the promising results achieved by a daily glass of pomegranate juice for men with slight to moderate erectile dysfunction. But it is believed that it is caused by the same antioxidants that are beneficial for the circulatory system.

Hormone replacement
Pomegranate can possibly replace oestrogen treatment is women after menopause, when there can be an increased need for the prevention of vascular disease and osteoporosis.

Cancer
Research indicates that pomegranate can possibly hinder the return of prostate cancer after surgery. A daily ingestion of ca. 230 ml pomegranate juice has been able to reduce the levels of PSA (prostate specific antigen) which is increased in prostate cancer.

Israeli research indicates that pomegranate seed oil can fight breast cancer.

Research also indicates that pomegranate juice is poisonous to oestrogen sensitive breast cancer cells, which are the most common in breast cancer, without causing adverse effects to healthy breast cells.

Overweight
Extracts from the leaves have been shown to reduce the appetite of overweight mice as well as reduce intestinal absorption. It is believed that the later effect is due to an inhibition of the fat digesting enzyme, lipase. These effects have not yet been tested in people.

Precautions
Never use herbal medicine if you suspect that you have symptoms which should be addressed by a doctor. If you feel no improvement within a month, contact a physiotherapist or another qualified professional.

Side Effects
No side effects with the recommended dose.
Overdose can lead to cramping, vomiting, and diarrhoea.
A study has shown that pomegranate in the equivalent of 0,4-1,2 mg pr. kg. bodyweight is non-toxic in rats.

Dosage
Juice: 230 ml per day
Extract, powder: 200-1000 mg per day depending on the strength.
