Proline, a non-essential amino acid is formed from glutamat and ornithine and is deposited as hydroxyproline in the body's collagen structures, which are the only reservoirs for this amino acid.
Vitamin C deficiency causes the destruction of collagen and loss of proline with the urine. This process is a precursor of many of the illnesses which are typical for old age and vitamin C deficiency.
Apparently, nitrate in combination with smoking can transform proline into carcinogens. Abnormally high proline concentrations are found in the blood in case of severe alcoholism and liver cirrhosis. Presumably this concentration displacement is indicative of the degeneration process in the liver tissue.
Proline's activity in connection with the synthesis of neurotransmitters is unclarified and requires more research, but there are some signs that a proline supplement can have a beneficial effect on learning capability.
