Resveratrol

Polyphenol and antioxidant which is produced in some plants as protection against various dangers, including fungal attack. It has anti-inflammatory properties, and can be used to prevent cardiovascular disease and as a cancer preventative.

Even though red grapes are the greatest source of reservartol (the Pinot noir grape contains the highest concentration), resveratrol can also be found in blueberries, blackberries, and cranberries, as well as in broccoli and peanuts.

The resveratrol content in red wine is seen as the reason behind (but more probably only a partial explanation for) the so-called “French paradox,” which is the observation that vcardiovascualr disease is relatively seldom in France, despite a traditionally high intake of saturated fat. Another explanation for this paradox is the high intake of vitamin D prevalent in the region.

Resveratrol counteracts the breakdown of LDL cholesterol and protects against the cell damage which normally occurs when LDL cholesterol is attacked by free oxygen radicals. resveratrol is also believed to counteract coagulation of platelets in the blood.

Resveratrol is also a phytoestrogen. This means that it can bind to the same cell receptors in the body as estrogen. Research is underway to determine if these substances can help ease hormone-related symptoms such as hot flashes in women.

Research is also underway regarding resveratrol ’s possible cancer preventative effects. Research indicates that resveratrol can reduce the development of malignant tumors in many ways and can reduce the spreading of cancer to the bones. Resveratrol ’s methods of action range from its anti-oxidant effects to its ability to increase the effectiveness of vitamin D and reduce the effectiveness of sex hormones to its abilities to turn gene sequences on and off and promote the effectiveness of traditional chemotherapy. A particular strength of resveratrol is that it can differentiate between normal cells and cancer cells. This is why it is believed that resveratrol could be able to increase tumor susceptibility to radiation treatment while making normal cells less affected.

Resveratrol has been shown to increase the lifespan of yeast cells, flies, and worms considerably by activating a special gene. Because humans have a similar gene, resveratrol might also be able to increase human lifespan, but this has yet to be scientifically verified.

  • Resveratrol is found in nature in both a trans and cis form
  • Resveratrol products are often derived from Japanese knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum)
  • One glass of red wine contains an average of 600 – 700 µg resveratrol
  • Pregnant and nursing women should avoid supplements containing resveratrol. Red wine should also be avoided.
