Serine

An amino acid. No reliable data on therapeutic applicability.

Serine is a non-essential amino acid with many different functions in the body. However, at the current stage of research, it has little therapeutic significance.

Serine is transformed into glycine and vice versa; the reaction requires the vitamins B3
(niacin), -B6 (pyridoxin), and folic acid. Serine is transformed into substances which stabilize the cell membranes, form neurotransmitters, and take part in the formation of DNA.

A disbalance between serine and cysteine seems to characterize many psychoses, but at this stage the research results are uncertain. Concomitant factors, in particular B vitamins, play an important role.

Gluten, soy beans and peanuts, which may cause allergy in the central nervous system, has a high content of serine. The same goes for some forms of junk food, e.g. hot dog sausages.

Since D-serine induces the growth of cancer tumors, there is a theoretical possibility that L-serine can inhibit cancer.

Serine is a part of phosphatidylserine, one of the very few substances which can possibly regenerate brain tissue in Alzheimer patients.

Therapeutic dosage
No data.

Warning!
Serine supplements can cause psychotic reactions and presumably high blood pressure.
