The name of this alga has changed from Spirulina platensis to Arthrospria platensis, but its commercial name, Spirulina, will be used in this article.
Spirulina, which should not be confused with Chlorella, grows in fresh water lakes in Mexico, Africa, Middle America, and China. Spirulina products are found in both powder and tablet forms. This micro alga contains a large amount of amino acids as well as vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, carotenes, and special polysaccharides with high molecular weights. These polysaccharides are believed to be responsible for immune-strengthening properties by increasing the body’s production of antibodies and cytokines (the signalling substances of the immune system). The precise working mechanism of Spirulina is not completely understood.
Viral infection
Research indicates that Spirulina, in addiction to being able to strengthen the immune system, could be used as a virus inhibiting drug; for example for AIDS and herpes infections. It can take up to six months before this effect can be assessed. Slight temporary worsening of symptoms has been seen after a few weeks of taking Spirulina.
Cancer
Because of its high nutritional value, Spirulina is a good supplement for those who do not get enough to eat, including cancer patients. It should be taken with meals.
Obesity
Because Spirulina contains high amounts of protein and expands in water it is well suited as a part of a diet programme. For this purpose, it should be taken 30 minutes before each meal.
Pain
Spirulina can be tried against chronic pain, such as joint pain. If used against nerve pain (neuralgia), the dose should be doubled. It likely works best for people over 50 years of age.
Spirulina is non toxic even in high doses.
