Sulphur (S)

Sulphur is an essential mineral that is a part of a number of body compounds and part of the chemical structure in a number of different amino acids.

An adult contains about 100 g. of sulphur. It is found in sulphurous proteins in all body tissues; especially muscles, skin, nails, and hair. Sulphur is necessary for the formation of collagen, which prevents dryness and preserves skin elasticity. Sulphur is likewise a prerequisite for the ability of the red blood cells; the binding of oxygen.

Sulphur counteracts bacterial infections, purifies the blood, and protects cell protoplasm.
Sulphur stimulates the production of bile and has a detoxicating effect. It also protects against harmful radiation and pollution and is said to prolong life.

Deficiency symptoms
Presumably tiredness and drowsiness, perhaps skin problems.

Therapeutic dosage
Is not entirely established. Our need is unofficially assessed to be about 850 mg. daily.

Sulphur is found in sprouts, beans, cabbage, eggs, fish, garlic, meat, onions, soya beans and in amino acids:
L-cysteine, L-methionine, L-Lysine, L-methionine, and in N-acetylcysteine, which is used as an expectorant.

Strong heat and moisture can change the body's sulphur balance.
