Theanine is derived from glutamic acid which can be seen from its chemical name, which is ethylamino-L-glutamic acid.
Theanine is the ingredient which is primarily responsible for the taste and the effect of green tea. It is believed that Theanine increases the level of the calming nervous signal chemical GABA and of the so called “reward” hormone dopamine in the brain. Japanese research suggests that consumption of theanine causes the brain to produce more alpha waves.
Theanine is believed to be good for:
- Improving concentration and learning ability
- Calming and relieving nervousness without causing drowsiness
- Blood pressure
- Discomfort and mood swings associated with menstruation
- The effects of high caffeine consumption (from, for example, coffee)
