Threonine, an essential amino acid is catabolized in the body to glycine, serine, and glucose, and presumeably acts as a helping agent for the absorption of glycine in the brain.
Animals on a threonine-low diet develop nervous diseases and paralyses which, however, could be cured with threonine supplements.
Many patients with low threonine values suffer from depression and reduced immune response and thyroid developments; they usually respond positively to threonine supplements.
Severe gluten intolerance can be modified with threonine supplements. Patients with multiple sclerosis also benefit from 500 mg. of threonine twice daily, which relieves their spasms.
This amino acid is only lacking in cereals. Vegetarians who primarily live on cereals may experience deficiency symptoms which lead to personality disorders.
Therapeutic dosage
For depression: 500 mg. daily, morning and evening, stepping up to 4 g. if necessary.
