Turmeric is a strong colouring yellow root which originates from India and Southeast Asia. The root has been used since prehistoric times for jaundice and liver diseases. In traditional Indian medicine it is used for inflammation of the alimentary tract, internal bleeding - also in the urinary system, breast pains, toothache, injuries, and colic.
Recent research has confirmed its effectiveness against liver- and gall problems. It is good for the blood pressure and fights some micro-organisms.
Much of the physiological effect is undoubtedly due to the colouring agent curcumin's direct influence on the adrenal glands. Curcumin is the basic colouring agent in curry.
