Valerian, common - Valeriana officinalis

Herb used as a sedative and in the treatment of insomnia. Relieves anxiety, uneasiness and restlessness, stomach trouble, neck tensions, and headache. Can also be used against asthma, intestinal problems, migraine, hypertension, and convulsions.

Valerian contains the so-called GABA substances which have a relaxing effect, and the herb can be useful in connection with hypertension caused by stress and overtaxing.

Valerian is not considered to be habit-forming or give any problems with awakening, which are otherwise common side effects from other known soporific products. The herb improves the length of sleep and the quality of sleep in general.

The herb improves the blood circulation and has a calming effect. Reduces the production of phlegm during colds. Has a diuretic effect and can be good for mild anxiety attacks. Valerian contains active substances that all have relaxing effects, e.g. valepotriates, bornyl acetate, and valeranon.

Valerian is also said to stabilize the ictus. Scientific research indicates that Valerian can relieve the spasms in the intestinal muscles that are linked to Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
