About macular degeneration
Macular degeneration is an age related degeneration of the retina. The disease is also known as calcification of the eye, and it causes loss of sensitivity of the optic nerve causing loss of central, sharp, sight. The cause of this is poor nourishment of the retina.
The degree of degeneration which occurs varies from person to person. In most cases the vision arising from a small part of the retina which is responsible for sharp sight is the most affected. Peripheral and orientations related sight remains normal.
There are two forms of macular degeneration, the dry form, which progresses slowly and is the most benign, and the wet form, which progresses quickly and results from the formation of new and blood vessels. These vessels can be leaky, causing fluid or blood to seep into the eye. This can be helped by laser treatments which are designed to stop the leakage of fluid. No other operation is possible.
Vision Support
This product is composed of a number of ingredients which all have known effects on eye disease.
- Blueberry (Vaccinum myrtillus): Contains antioxidants. Known for strengthening eye tissue and night vision.
- Grape seed extract: Contains proantocyanides, which are strong antioxidants. It strengthens the eyes fine blood vessels and counteracts the breakdown of the retina.
- Lutein: An important antioxidant of the eye which protects the eye from ultraviolet radiation.
- Lycopene: This carotenoid is also an important antioxidant for the eye.
- N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine: This amino acid is easily taken in by the body, where it enhances the production of the important antioxidant glutathione. This inhibits the development of cataracts.
- Quercetin: This flavonoid is used in the treatment of cataracts.
- Taurine: Lack of taurin can cause sight loss.
- Beta carotene: The precursor of vitamin A. Inhibits night blindness, dry eyes, and cataracts.
- Zinc: Often lacking in people with macular degeneration. Zinc works with vitamin A (beta ceroten).
