The family Dioscoreaceae consists of approximately 650 species. Several of these have a hormonal effect on the body. Real yam (Mexican tropical yam or wild yam) contains alkaloids, resin, tannins, and a steroid saponin called diosgenin, a prestade to hormone used in the original contraceptive pill.
The origins of the plant are in North- and Latin America. Edible yam does not contain any diosgenin worth mentioning.
Yam must be boiled before it is eaten since it contains a toxic alkaloid, discorin, which is destroyed when boiled.
By means of a special process, the hormone progesteron can be produced from yam root oil. This nature identical progesteron is used in various lotions for smearing onto the skin. It works best on thin skin, e.g. the skin of the face and hands, underarms, or the soles of the feet, since this natural progesteron is absorbed 70 times better through the skin than by eating it, in which case the liver will catabolize it quickly.
From the skin progesteron penetrates into the small blood vessels and avoids the liver to begin with.
