Yellow dock – Rumex crispus

Has blood cleansing, bile promoting, and mild laxative effects. Good for detoxifying the body, digestive problems, arthritis, and some skin disorders.

The root contains many active substances in the form of glucosides, tannins, oxalic acid, and etheric oils. It also contains iron. The leaves should not be used.

Yellow dock is useful if one has a tendency for constipation, digestive problems, oily skin, eczema, rashes, itching, and psoriasis. It can also be used against arthritis and gallbladder infection.

Dosage
Dried herb: 6 – 12 g daily
1:2 extract: 2 – 4 ml daily

Side effects and interactions
Yellow dock is non-toxic and has no known interactions at the recommended dosage. At high dosages Yellow dock could theoretically interact with diuretics, heart medication (digoxin), medicine used for irregular heartbeat, as well as liquorish root.

Yellow dock can be used during pregnancy and nursing, but must be used with care. Avoid long term use of yellow dock (more than 6 – 8 weeks) because of increased laxative effects.

Precautions
Never use herbal medicine if you in doubt whether or not you have symptoms which should be examined by a doctor.

Broadleaf dock – Rumex obtusifolius
This related species has similar effects.

Broadleaf dock has blood cleansing and mild laxative effects. It stimulates bile secretion. It can be used for anemia during pregnancy, bleeding from the lungs, arthritis, hemorrhoids, liver and intestine imbalances, and for skin disorders such as psoriasis, eczema, and rash. Also used against iron deficiency.

Slightly bitter, this root is safest for use internally because of its lower oxalate content.
