Zeaxanthin

Yellow plant pigment which belongs to the group of carotenoids. Research indicates that it protects against certain eye diseases like age-related macular degeneration and cataract.

Zeaxanthin is part of the very large group of the so-called phytochemicals. Zeaxanthin is present in the retina of the eye and it is supposed to be able to protect from the eye diseases of macular degeneration and cataract. The highest risk of developing these diseases can be found in people with a low content of zeaxanthin in the eyes. The working mechanism is said to be the ability of the zeanxanthin to protect the eye and the surrounding blood vessels from the damages of free radicals and by inhibiting damages of the retina cased by light in the blue spectrum.

Zeaxanthin is fat-soluble and for this reason it is most optimally utilized by the body together with a fatty substance of another kind. In your diet zeaxanthin can be found in egg, caviar, paprika, spinach, red pepper, maize, sweet potatoes, and various fruits.
